West Michigan Christian News writer Terry DeBoer surveys the landscape for the area's faith-based arts/entertainment/enrichment events over the coming holiday month. Here are three highlights for December:
"The Promise" – The Christmas-message dance program featuring the performance ensemble of the Turning Pointe School of Dance is presented in six performances: 7pm Dec. 7,8,14 and 15 with 2pm matinees on Sat. Dec. 7 and 14 in Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 E. 8th St. Holland. The story of Christ's birth is told with scripture, music and dynamic classical and contemporary ballet. The production is in its 19th season. Advance tickets are $22 adults, $17 students; $2 higher at the door. Available through the Hope College ticket office, 616-395-7890; or online with service fee.
"Christmas at Calvary - Welcome to Bethlehem" – Calvary Church in Grand Rapids, formerly hosts of the "Festival of Lights" Christmas program, returns with this new production at 7pm Fri. Dec. 14 and Sat. 15, and 3pm Dec. 14. The trio of performances is presented in their newly-remodeled facility at 707 E. Beltline NE. The story features the staff of the Bethlehem Inn which brings Christmas-season hope to a homeless, runaway teen and a struggling couple, just when it seems they have nowhere to turn. Aaron Shust - The inspirational music artist makes an "Unto Us Christmas Tour" stop at 7pm Sun. Dec. 16 at Grace Community Church, 3500 New Holland St. Hudsonville. The tour is presented by Compassion Live. Shust is the singer-songwriter behind such Christian radio hits as "My Hope is in You," "No One Higher," and his signature "My Savior My God" which won a Dove Award as Song of the Year. Also on the bill is JJ Weeks. General admission tickets are $15, VIP passes/tickets $25. (VIP includes pre-show meet & greet with artists). Available online.
