Local Author Releases New Book for Writers

PBK15RenderAnn Byle has interviewed close to a thousand people throughout her career as a freelance writer for local and national publications.

Now she's used that interview experience to fashion a practical book for Christian writers. "Christian Publishing 101: The comprehensive guide to writing well and publishing successfully—for new authors, editors, and students" is based on interviews with publishing professionals and book authors who provide advice in what could be called a "writer's conference in a book."

When writers go to a conference, often they cannot attend every session due to scheduling overlaps. With this book, that's not a problem. "I don't expect people to be interested in every single chapter," Byle said. "I tried to come up with a wide range of topics to apply to many different genres."

Topics include building a writing life, writing fiction and nonfiction, writing for children, using social media, and publishing options. Those interviewed include fiction authors Jerry B. Jenkins, Sarah Sundin, and Hudsonville author Tracy Groot; children's authors Crystal Bowman and Grand Rapids residents Kenneth Kraegel and Kevin Kammeraad; agent Steve Laube; and other nationally known experts.

"I want beginning and intermediate writers to have one place they can go to get information on a variety of different subjects," said Byle. "Beginners can gain knowledge and inspiration and get over early hurdles, while intermediate writers can learn useful things such as blogging, publishing, and social media."

At the end of each chapter, Byle includes a few "assignments" for readers.

"Lots of writers read lots of books and never actually write anything. I wanted to get readers to move deeper into their thinking about a topic, to really think through things like their mission statement, publishing plan, how their spiritual journey affects their writing," she said.

Writers are encouraged to do the exercises that apply to their genres and experience levels to help cement newfound knowledge.

Byle writes for West Michigan Christian News, Publishers Weekly, Grand Rapids Magazine and CBA Market. She also wrote for The Grand Rapids Press for nearly 20 years. In 2006 she published "The Making of a Christian Bestseller: An Insider's Guide to Christian Publishing." Along with her writing career, Byle is on the planning committee of the Breathe Christian Writers Conference—a conference for new and intermediate writers held in October each year (breatheconference.com).

Writing this book taught Byle a few things, too.

"I learned I'm woefully behind in social media. I really got inspired to work on that," she said. You can find her (and her chickens) on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, as well as on her website annbylewriter.com.

Readers and writers can find "Christian Publishing 101" at Baker Book House and on Amazon. The book was published by Credo House Publishers and printed at Color House Graphics.

"Every writer struggles," Byle says. "You're not the only one, so take heart and start writing."
