Terry’s Picks: April, 2014
West Michigan Christian web writer Terry DeBoer surveys the landscape for area arts and entertainment events of special interest to the West Michigan faith community. Here are three highlights for April.
*Metropolitan Choir of Praise – The 70-member choir presents its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Sun. April 6 at First Christian Reformed Church, 2450 85 St. SW Byron Center. Special guest is The Big Band of Praise and the ensembles will perform several selections together, including “God of Grace,” “Standing on the Promises” and “Take Up Your Cross.” The choir is directed by Dr. Mark Taylor and accompanied by Vicki Williams. There is no admission charge for the concert but a free-will offering will be received. Visit them online for more information.
*”The Resistance” – The musical stage drama is based on the true story of Diet Eman, a woman now living in Grand Rapids who participated in the Dutch Resistance against the Nazis during World War II. Intertwined is the story of the last days of Jesus, including his death and resurrection. The production is set for 7 p.m. April 17-19 with a 2 p.m. matinee on April 19 at Blythefield Hills Baptist Church, 6727 Kuttshill Dr. NE Rockford. Tickets are $3 or $5, depending on the performance. Portions of the play may be too intense for very young children. For more information visit them online or call Christy 616.866.9597 ext. 134.
*Tim Hawkins – The comedian performs at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Sat. April 26 at Sunshine Community Church, 3300 E. Beltline NE. Much of his musical comedy is based on his humorous looks at family life. “Comedy is my life skill,” he says. The concerts are a benefit for Paradise Bound Ministries, a faith-based organization with extensive ministries in Guatemala including the Open Doors Orphanage. Tickets are $22 and are $25 at the door; group rates may be available. Visit them online or call 888-780-1116. Hawkins’ personal invitation to the concert can be seen on Youtube.
