Terry’s Picks for December 2021
This is the column in which West Michigan Christian News writer Terry DeBoer surveys the landscape for the area's faith-inspired arts/entertainment/events in the coming month. Here are a few Christmas themed happenings:
Selah - The award-winning, inspirational trio presents a Christmas concert at 7pm Thur. Dec. 9 at Ridge Point Community Church, 340 104th Ave. Holland. Singers Todd Smith, Amy Perry and Allan Hall are expected to draw from the group's Christmas album ("Rose of Bethlehem") featuring a mixture of traditional and contemporary songs. Selah's most recent album, "Step Into My Story," won a 2021 Dove Award. Doors open at 6pm. Tickets are $20 general admission, $35 dollars for select "artist circle" seating. Nativity Scene Display – Here's a different kind of holiday event helping to keep the focus on the reason for the season. Nativity sets from various places and cultures will be displayed in two special programs at 4pm both Sat. Dec. 11 and Sun. Dec. 12 at Oakview Community Church, 4242 Plainfield Ave. NE in Grand Rapids. Background information about the nativity scenes will be shared; refreshments and carol singing are part of the free admission event. For more information call 363-8079.
"Bethlehem Experience & Live Nativity" – The event is planned for three evenings (Dec. 10-12) at Jenison Bible Church, 6360 14th Ave, in Hudsonville. The indoor Bethlehem Experience features a mock-up of the original city of Jesus's birth complete with shop keepers, Roman guards, etc. with craft projects for kids. The outdoor Living Nativity includes guided, small-group tour, journey to the stable while visiting the shepherds, wisemen, angels as well as Mary, Joseph and the baby (there's also an animal petting area). Refreshments served indoors. The event is free. Times are 6-8pm Friday, 5-8pm Sat. 5-7pm Sunday.
