Perspective: Another View of Preventing Suicide in the Public Schools

SethCarozza3What drives a teenager to commit suicide? What can be done to prevent such tragedies? A recent seminar held by a local school district tried to answer these questions. Focusing on how to stop suicidal depression, the keynote speaker spent the evening discussing the various methods of diagnosis and treatment. While well intentioned, the speaker fell short of addressing some important causes that may lead teens to fall into suicidal depression. The brief overview of causes left the seminar appearing to put a band-aid on the problem without considering other factors. As we attempt to stop teen suicide, we may have overlooked elements in our public education system that could be fueling suicidal depression.
