Perspective: God's Strong (Financial) Arm

By Dr. Rex M. Rogers

arm2Financial pressures are never fun. They come and they go, but somewhere along the way most of us experience them. Financial pressures: whether the result of our decisions or whether they happen to us, are a fact of life.

In the past few years, nationally and internationally, we’ve dealt with economic downturns, recessions, deficits, property “bubbles” and foreclosures, a “stimulus” or two, bad loans, unemployment, bear markets, “bailouts,” multi-trillion dollar debt, “austerity programs,” trade imbalances, tax revenue versus budget reduction debates, and now the “fiscal cliff.”

Grand Rapids alone has one church for every 1000 people, which is a fifty percent higher ratio of churches to residents than other large Midwest cities like Detroit, Columbus and St Louis. Beyond the numbers, West Michigan is one of the few places in the nation where religious influence is still felt, welcomed and unopposed in the political, business and educational communities.

By Timothy Burns

tony2Dr. Tony Campolo is my kind of preacher. Experienced, thorough, focused on Christ and he expects that the gospel should affect personal change within the church and cultural change in society. In short, Dr. Campolo preaches and believes like Jesus lived. Jesus loved and cared with grace and mercy while at the same time speaking the truth to those who wavered between self, sin and salvation. Sometimes truth brought his listeners into the kingdom, and at other times, they walked away, unable to accept both the demands and blessings of love.
