Grand Rapids Church More Than Ready for "Art Prize"

By Terry De Boer

There’s likely no church in West Michigan more involved in Art Prize than Monroe Community Church, on Monroe Ave. NW just north of downtown Grand Rapids.

“Our church art gallery is also our sanctuary, so the Art Prize exhibits surround us as we worship on Sundays,” note Steve Fridsma, one of several church members on an art selection panel.

Art Prize is an open, international art competition featuring more than 1,500 works of art exhibited at more than 170 locations around the Grand Rapids area. Voters have a say in who wins the hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money.

The Carlson Report: Sexuality and the Bible

jeff44Our culture has become very comfortable with open sexuality. But what is sex really all about? In order to understand what sex is really all about, we have to go to the Bible. We have to go back to the beginning, and read God’s instructions in Genesis 2.

Christians in Business: Baumann Building

By Amelia Rhodes

baumann2Mike Baumann, of Baumann Building, started out as a farmer.

Baumann showed up for work and was informed this would be his last week on the job. After just two weeks of marriage, Baumann found himself unemployed.

“God was good, and the next day I went to work. I’ve worked every day since then that I wanted to work,” Baumann recalled. The day he lost his job, Baumann started making phone calls to friends in the industry. A man he knew had work for him, and Baumann started framing the very next day.

From Approval to Access: Dove Enters the Digital Arena

By Dick Rolfe

If you’ve been keeping up with the evolution in home entertainment and watched it transition from DVD’s and Blu-ray discs to digital delivery, you may already be using one or more of the new services.

In the 90’s you could rent a movie for a few bucks a night.  In the years that followed, rentals were replaced by purchase-only DVD’s, leaving kiosks like Redbox and Video On Demand (VOD) services from the cable and satellite companies as the only movie rental options.

Prayer in the City Continues

EVENTS2We are growing! At our last time together, we had over 30 brothers and sisters from 13+ different churches praying from 7 to 8:30.

If you want to get in on the joy of joining others in helping to bring healing to our city through your prayers, our next city wide gathering to pray for revival for Grand Rapids is 7:00-8:30 PM, Thursday, October 16 at Hope Reformed Church, 2010 Kalamazoo SE, in GR 49507.  (The Southwest corner of Burton and Kalamazoo Avenue). All are welcome!

An encouraging example from history: On September 23, 1857 six people met for prayer in NYC. A few weeks later, the stock market crashed and many lost their jobs. By December of that year, 10,000 people in NYC alone were praying every day!! The movement spread all across our nation.Soon over 20,000 people were coming to Christ every week for many months! It CAN happen again!

Finance: Dave Says....

davernew2Dear Dave,

Some friends recently offered me a timeshare. It’s an older place on the beach, and they’ve had it for about 20 years. I’d have to pay a transfer fee of $100, plus a yearly association fee of $500. I know you’re not a big fan of timeshares, but does this deal sound okay?
