Local: Changing the Culture, Not just Teaching about God

By Timothy Burns

clancy2Clancy Street Ministries (CSM) began as a neighborhood Sunday school program in 1988 by Mr. and Mrs. Brower. With little more than a small house and an empty three stall garage, they chose the Clancy Street – Creston Plaza Apartment neighborhood as their “church.” The abundance of children living in poverty, and often without adult supervision, was the perfect environment for the Brower’s game, Bible story and snack night. Within three years, the need exceeded the Brower's resources, at which time Clancy Street Ministries was formally organized and Reverends Steve and Carol Haas became the ministries first and only paid staff. Today, just south of Leonard and east of the river, Steve and Carol work side by side to make a lasting difference on the inner-city culture as they preach the gospel and teach neighborhood residents fundamental life skills.

Local Author Releases New Book to Help Victims of Abuse

By Susan Lewis

Author_releases_book_to_help_victims3Research shows that there is a report of child abuse every ten seconds in the United States. Another study indicates that every nine seconds a woman in the United States is assaulted or beaten. That’s reason enough for Dr. Peter Newhouse, director of the Winning At Home Family Wellness Center in Zeeland, Michigan to release his latest title, “Winning the Battle Over Abuse, A Self-Directed Guide to Healing”. This workbook is a reflection of Dr. Newhouse’s own personal journey and from years of helping and counseling clients who have dealt with the emotional repercussions from all types of exploitation.

UV Protection

By Dan Seaborn

I was in an art store recently and a woman was there getting a picture back that she had taken in to be framed. The picture was a wedding photo of her and her husband from 20 plus years ago. When the clerk handed the woman her picture back in the nice, newly-matted frame, there was this deep gasp that grabbed my attention. I looked over and realized what caused the sharp intake of breath. She had put the old picture into a newer, larger frame than the one before. Where the sun had been shining through the glass with the previous frame, it had discolored quite significantly so that you could see a real clear line where the fading and unfading met. And she was just taken aback by the effects 20 years of fading had on her picture.

Lifestyles: How to Regain Your Focus

By Kimberly Gleason

glasses2Being a business owner, I often lose sight of what’s important. I memorize my presentations (so I can wow my audience), balance my books (so I don’t get in trouble), attend networking events (so I can find clients), and take continuing education courses (so I can know and implement best practices in coaching and leadership development). Yes, I lose focus, which as a business owner, means fulfilling my mission: to help my clients grow and flourish, both personally and professionally.

Finance: Buy It or Turn It In?

Dear Dave,

I made the mistake of leasing a car a while back, and the lease is up in about nine months. Should I save up the money between now and then to buy it, or save as much as I can to pay down my student loans?
