Terry’s Picks: January 2017

EVENTSWest Michigan Christian News writer Terry DeBoer surveys the landscape for the area’s faith-based arts, entertainment, and enrichment events over the coming month. Here are three highlights for January:

*Vertical Church Band – The worship-based ensemble performs at 7 p.m. Fri. Jan 20 in Christ Chapel at Cornerstone University, East Beltline in Grand Rapids. Doors open at 6 p.m. The band, part of the multi-site Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago, is also the guest at a worship leader workshop where it will discuss its planning and songwriting approaches. The group’s most recent album is “Frontiers.” Advanced reserved concert tickets are $15, (student rate $10), higher price on day of event. (Worship leader workshop is ticketed separately). *Calvin Symposium on Worship – The annual three-day conference is set for Jan. 26-28 on the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids. Included are seminars, workshops, retreats, vespers and plenary addresses. Among the participants is Bruce Benedict, chaplain of worship and the arts at Hope College and director of the Hope College Worship Team. Among the performers is the ACTion Choir, a Grand Rapids-based ensemble and a program of Artists Creating Together that empowers individuals with disabilities to learn, grow and celebrate through the arts. *Building 429 – The Christian pop-rock band performs at 7 p.m. Sat. Jan 28 in Community Reformed Church, 10376 Felch St. in Zeeland. The foursome most recently appeared in West Michigan last summer as part of the Worship on the Waterfront (WoW) series in Grand Haven. Their Christian radio hits include songs such as “Where I Belong” and “We Won’t Be Shaken.” Special guest is Jamison Strain. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for groups of 10 or more.
