New Music Review: Orlando Rodriguez

Written by Terry DeBoer on . Posted in Local

orlandoOrlando "Substance" Rodriguez has officially gone nationwide with his latest release.

The Grand Rapids-based singer-songwriter has been working these songs for the past several years. But "Turn the World Off" made its USA chart debut several months ago, when his song "You're There" reached Billboard Magazine's list of "most added gospel singles."

Navigating between urban and Christian contemporary sounds, Rodriguez features numerous ballads and several up-tempo tunes on this collection. "Living Blessed" boasts tight harmonies with an urban beat and dashes of hip-hop assisted by his label mate Watchmane.

The Jenison, Mich. native showcases his pop vocals in "It's Not About Me," which lyrically makes the case that reflecting Jesus in your life is what's most important.
There are a number of slower ballads, one ("We Need You") undergirded with strings and another ("Just One") with acoustic guitar.

All of the songs were written or co-written by the artist along with producer Chuck Alkazian.

Earlier in his life the smooth-sounding Rodriguez had pursued a mainstream music career, serving as a booking agent and producer as well as a singer-songwriter. But since his conversion he has been wrapped up in gospel music, traveling for concert dates and opening shows for noted artists such as Tamela Mann and Donnie McClurkin.

Recently he was saluted on the local Ignite Radio Show, co-hosted by J.R. Pittman and Sarena Rae on Sunday evenings on Magic 104.9 FM.
